Tales of Demons and Gods is an epic manga with a badass main character. It's a dark story about lost, blood, hope, and value of life. The first 4 volumes, collectively called the Black Swordsman Arc, start off as a straightforward revenge story. Guts, our main character was wrong, and he intends to rectify that by viciously killing some demon or any asshole stands in his way.
But that kind of narrative is averted, as we are shown Guts's backstory, which immediately transforms from a sin story to a narrative of betrayal, politics, romance, building friendships, lasting hell, experience, shielding the ones you hold dear, as well as the mind of the most important character.
Until the notorious Eclipse occurs. I will not spoil ANYTHING with this occasion but suffice to say that following it, you associate with the protagonist's Jerk-Ass facade even more, and you even relate to the principal antagonist. And the reasons why Midland is this kind of barbarous and dark place to reside is revealed in detail.
Talking about the detail, about the artwork. Art in a manga plays equally as significant a function as the narrative, possibly even more so. The art in Tales of Demons and Gods is outright fantastic and stays a degree of quality throughout, which can be equally as striking as the quality of the narrative.
The first few volumes or so show detail and ability, but the grade isn't up to the subsequent chapters. And that is what makes Tales of Demons and Gods even more of a joy to see, as Miura intends to demonstrate that he wants Tales of Demons and Gods not to only be recalled by its epic narrative, but he needs it to be considered a work of art.
As the artwork style enhances, we see the caliber of the artwork get better and better. It is very detailed, and tiny items like gentle hand shading, personality expressions, usage of ink artistically to mimic spurting, gushing blood, and these make the art a masterpiece of pencil and ink design.
About the characters, each and every character is profound and accomplished, relatable, and likable. Hell, even the villains are heavy and relatable, despite the fact that they do deplorable functions. No doubt profound characters are helped by the caliber of the storyline, but each character you can relate to, and origin.
Guts are among the strangest, most complex protagonists which exist. His flaws, he makes mistakes, he is powerful and needless to say, a badass, and extremely prone to amazing moments. Said awesome moments are not always combating scenes, sometimes they are conversations with different characters, chapters dedicated to his mind. All of these create Guts a remarkable character.
The villains are heavy and distinctive, which increases the total intrigue of the storyline. The most important antagonist becomes special mention since they're shown either side of this coin. You get scenes in which they're a good and decent person, then you get scenes such as the notorious Eclipse. The characters just increase the storyline and make it more believable.
In general, it's an outstanding manga with remarkable artwork, amazing storyline, interesting characters all culminate to produce a manga that's a must-read, even when you are not into manga, just give it a try.
